With our guts
Tony, the road to the semifinal seems clearer following this latest win in Denver.
It was a very physical game. The referees had decided to let the game be played tonight. It was one of those heated game. We had a bit of difficulties to get in the game and were dominated on the rebounds. We've run into a few problems to stop Carmelo Anthony but in the fourth quarter we did not let go. We've remained together and a not time did we panicked. We came back slowly and in the last two minutes we've managed to move ahead. We are extremely happy to head back home with this second consecutive win on the road.
Once again Robert Horry (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/robert_horry) was decisive, scoring a three pointer with 30 seconds to play in the game. Can you tell us a bit more about this play that sealed the game ?
During the time out Pop had called a system for me. I had to play one on one to try to make draw a foul on me. The objective was to get back to the free-throw line as Denver was already over the limit with 5 fouls. While I passed Iverson, trying to penetrate I saw Camby arrive. Instead of risking the block, I immediately passed the ball to Robert who was alone behind the 3 point line. I knew he was going to score. The ball did not even touch the rim; it made a nice "swish" sound. We've killed the game with this play.
Against your habit, San Antonio shot 25 times from long range. Why ?
The problem is that Denver always closes the paint every time we've tried to penetrate with Manu (Ginobili). I thus let go a maximum of balls for my teammates with open shots. With a bit more luck (8/25), we could have had a more comfortable lead but even without being able to score these baskets we've managed to stay in the game. We were strong mentally. Personally I think I have played a good game. I've never try to force it (7/11 shooting). It was not easy for me as Camby and Nen?always came to help on every pick and roll.
Until the middle of the 4th quarter you've had very few free-throws. How do you explain this in such a physical game ?
It is a bit frustrating but on the other side I was not going to go and cry in front of the refs. I did not want to get fined. I only had one free-throw over the past two games but I've come to accept it.
Satisfied before heading back to San Antonio ?
It was a big win. It feels very good mentally to go back home with the break. We've got this win with our guts. We were very happy in the locker room. There was a lot of emotion and now we wish to end the work on Wednesday in San Antonio. If we manage to win, we should face Phoenix. We would need a bit of time to rest before this series especially as the Suns have home court advantage. I respect Denver, it is a big team but on Wednesday I wish to close the series.
