Here's an Eastern Conference scout on the San Antonio Spurs pick of point guard George Hill of IUPUI: "This kid can play every fact of the game. He has long arms, quick and is really, really a terrific scorer. He probably rebounds the point guard position better than any point guard in the country. He's a legit player. He could've started for anyone in America."

The Spurs also had been high on French forward Nicolas Batum, who was drafted by Houston (for Portland) one spot earlier.

9:53 pm: Anticipation grows for the Spurs' pick at No. 26. I talk briefly with George's Godfather, Mike Saunders. Saunders' alternates between clutching his Sanyo phone and plugging it in to it's charger. Saunders admits it would've been nice for George's name to have already been called, but now action will start heating up.

9:54 pm: Saunders and Knox share a hug and start clapping their hands as the Spurs go on the clock. Meanwhile, the crowd is gravitating to George, who has shifted positions to the center of the room behind the sofa.

10:02 pm: PANDEMONIUM! George, meet Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, you're now a proud member of the San Antonio Spurs! The Spurs have just gained about 75 fans inside this building. People are clapping, crying, hugging and exchanging high fives.

Hill went from a huge smile to tears in about 2.3 seconds after Stern uttered his name.

10:12 pm: You can't get within 50 feet of George at this point. He's in the back office with Hunter, Knox, Saunders and Co. and outside the door is a line of everyone else. WISH-TV's Chris Widlic just called the cell phone he's en route for some reaction.

Knox just announced that George is on the phone with his agent, Mike Whitaker, and he'll "be right out".

10:25 pm: A tearful Hill emerged from the back office to a standing ovation. Pastor Higgins just gave one of the most moving prayers I've ever heard in my life. George is addressing the crowd.

"The goal was to make it, and now we've made it. Thanks and I'm gonna' ball out like we always do."

11:04 pm: Calling it a night for blogging... media crush the past 30 minutes. WISH-TV and WTHR have both stopped by to get some reaction - I suggest tuning in. George still has tears in his eyes and will probably still be hugging well wishers for the next couple hours.

Spurs go off the radar with Hill

When George Hill came to town to visit with Spurs officials for a pre-draft interview earlier this week, coach Gregg Popovich took him out for lunch with a local flair.

What Hill put in his gullet that day was definitely an acquired taste for the guard from Division-IAA IUPUI. Apparently, you can't get Tex-Mex, good or otherwise, in Indiana.

Hill wasn't quite ready to give his South Texas culinary experience two thumbs up, but he is willing to give it another shot.

“I think I could learn to like it,” Hill said.

What Hill is hoping now, after the Spurs made him the 26th pick of the first round in Thursday's NBA draft, is that San Antonio learns to like him.

A 6-foot-2 scorer who played both guard positions in college, Hill is projected as a point guard in the NBA. The Spurs expect him to compete with Jacque Vaughn for the backup position behind Tony Parker next season.

“He's a really solid player at both ends of the court,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. “I honestly believe he will make our team better right off the bat.”

Hill's selection marked the beginning of an unusually busy draft night for the Spurs, who had two second-round picks to use as well.

They spent the first on Slovenian guard Goran Dragic, then immediately swapped his rights to Phoenix for the rights to Malik Hairston, a 6-foot-6 forward from Oregon who the Suns had taken 48th. In the deal, the Spurs also netted Golden State's 2009 second round pick, which Phoenix also owned, and cash considerations.

With their final pick, the 57th overall, the Spurs took James Gist, a 6-8 forward from Maryland.

Popovich declared himself very pleased with the night's proceedings.

“The people we hoped to be there at all of our picks were there,” Popovich said.

They were particularly pleased to see Hill still lingering on the draft board at No. 26.

Hill, 22, is the first American born player the Spurs have drafted in the first round — and meant to keep for themselves — since 1997, when they took a senior from Wake Forest named Tim Duncan.

Their picks since were spent on a collection of foreign players and prospects drafted for other teams as part of pre-arranged deals. Hailing from a tiny college in the middle of a basketball hotbed, Hill might as well have come from the other side of the planet as well.

IUPUI — full name Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis — is a mid-major basketball school playing in the Summit League that, until Thursday, had never produced an NBA draftee.

Hill made averaged 21.5 points per game last season, earning Player of the Year honors in the Summit League for his efforts. The Spurs selected him over guards from bigger schools — like Kansas' Mario Chalmers and Memphis' Chris Douglas-Roberts — who were also on the board at the time.

Hill made his money at last month's pre-draft camp in Orlando, where he impressed scouts with his athleticism, defensive tenacity and basketball acumen.

“You couldn't tell if I was from IUPUI or Duke,” Hill said by phone from Indianapolis on Thursday. “I think I showed a lot.”

So good was Hill in Orlando that some in the Spurs' camp worried other teams might catch wind and steal him from out from under their noses.

“Nobody really knew who he was, and probably even now some people don't know who he is,” Popovich said. “A lot of people found out about him because of Orlando.”

When Houston took French forward Nicolas Batum at No. 25, there was much rejoicing in the Spurs' war room.

“I don't remember a draft since maybe Tony (in 2001) where we keyed in on a player or two, and they got there,” Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said.

At about the same time the Spurs staff was exulting in San Antonio, there was also celebration in Indianapolis, where Hill was making school history in front of a collection of friends, family and fans.

“Everybody was speechless,” Hill said. “They can't believe a guy from this school has had this success.”

Now, Hill is champing at the bit to get to San Antonio. He'll need plenty of time to get adjusted to the Tex-Mex.

He — and his taste buds — can hardly wait.

“I was hoping I'd land a spot in San Antonio,” Hill said. “I feel like that's the perfect fit for me.”

All you need to know about George Hill, the player the Spurs drafted in the first round of Thursday's NBA draft, is this: There was a celebration in the Spurs' draft night war room when the Houston Rockets made Frenchman Nicolas Batum the 25th selection of the first round, leaving Hill to the Spurs.

Anyone within a mile or two of the Spurs' practice facility, where the basketball operations staff gathered to make the picks, would have heard the groaning and cursing had the Rockets snatched the guard from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis from the Spurs' draft night grasp.

Hill, you see, is no loaf of bread. The Spurs have a recent history of picking first-rounders they have no intention of signing for a season or two. Popovich likens this to baking these prospects in an oven to make sure they're ready for the NBA.

Hill, who recently turned 22, requires no additional heat. Popovich, a discerning gourmet, believes his newest player is a perfectly risen soufflé.

Unless you are a fan of small college basketball, you probably hadn't heard of Hill when NBA commissioner David Stern announced the Spurs had picked him. But Hill will get a chance to be point guard Tony Parker's backup, and right away.

The term “impact player” is overused each draft season. The Spurs haven't even hinted they had drafted in impact player for the past seven years. The last pick they believed capable of making an immediate difference: Parker, in 2001.

Now, Popovich promises that Hill will make the Spurs better next season.

跟是否看視頻無關，Hill速度不如Parker但籃下的拋投與勾射是很像Parker，Hill連續三年的FG%都在五成以上，可以證明他的投射能力是沒問題的，這跟Parker靠切入在歐洲拿MVP是截然不同的，而且Parker的切入能力到了NBA賽場依舊犀利，外線投射跟急停跳投卻需要馬刺找來Chip England調教，所以單拿Parker當模板我是抱持質疑態度的。

哇嗚，美國已經有很多馬刺迷拿George Hill跟Ben Gordon甚至Monta Ellis相提並論了，還說6呎2吋的George Hill打球的表現根本跟他的身高不符，完全像一個6呎6吋身高的球員，說的真貼切，否則一個6呎2吋的後衛能有單場抓下13個籃板、連續3場比賽10籃板的表現，的確是跟他的身高不符，看來馬刺真的有可能撿到一個寶，為什麼說檢到？因為George Hill到過很多球隊試訓，包括塞爾提克、湖人、國王、超音速、火箭、灰狼、馬刺、小牛。

虽然联盟中现在 undersized guard 不少，不过我们最好先不要这么着急的定下过高的期望值。

总体上来说选 Hill 就是让他当 Parker 的替补的。当然有一点可以肯定，Parker-Hill 同时在场、打另类的小球(双PG后场+正常的SF/PF/C前场)，也是会在一定的时间内出现的。
