As the closing seconds ticked away late Saturday at the AT&T Center, and history, finally, was within his grasp, Paul Pierce looked over the scorer's table at Boston announcer Tommy Heinsohn and smiled.

"It's about time," Pierce said.

Seventeen years and 31 days, to be exact.

Fueled by nearly two decades of losing here — and a season's worth of frustration — the Boston Celtics stared down what appeared to be another memorable comeback by the Spurs, beating them 91-85 behind Pierce's late-game heroics.

The Celtics' first victory in San Antonio since Feb. 14, 1990, and their first on any court against Tim Duncan (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/tim_duncan), came appropriately enough on St. Patrick's Day. Boston didn't rely on the luck of the Irish — unless that was a leprechaun who put a lid over the Spurs' basket — as much as it did Pierce's talent.

Having never beaten the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) in his nine-year career, Pierce scored 30 points, made two tough shots in the final 86 seconds and drew a critical charge on Manu Ginobili (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/manu_ginobili), preserving the Celtics' victory after they surrendered a 19-point lead in the second half.

"It was more like getting a gorilla off my back," Pierce said.

The 260-pound load on Pierce's back was Duncan, who looked ready to extend his career victory total over Boston to 19 consecutive games when he tossed in a short hook shot with 1:34 left. Pierce, however, ended the Spurs' rally, answering with a tough fadeaway over Bruce Bowen (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/bruce_bowen).

Bowen then compounded matters by losing the ball as he tried to drive through the lane, leading to an easy dunk by Gerald Green. Tony Parker (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/tony_parker), who led the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) with 30 points, banked in a shot only to have it waved off when he was called for traveling.

Pierce followed with another fadeaway over Bowen, then sealed the victory by absorbing a charge from Ginobili. After winning 13 consecutive games, the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) now have a two-game losing streak.

"Paul's a good player, and he's been in that situation numerous times," Bowen said. "You don't want them taking something they're comfortable with. I know he likes to step back, and he hit the last two he took, going left and right.

"You just want to make sure you make it as tough as possible, and he made the big shots when he needed them."

Duncan looked poised to be the hero after helping lead the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) back from a 19-point deficit with less than a minute left in the third quarter. Unable to keep Boston off the boards even with two big men on the floor, Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) coach Gregg Popovich elected to go small and surround Duncan — who totaled 20 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks — with four guards.

The move allowed the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) to get back in the game. Had those guards also been able to hit a shot, the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) might have even been able to win.

The Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) missed 16 of their 17 3-point attempts, including their first 14, and shot 37.3 percent overall. They also blew a number of layup attempts.

"We played poorly the first three quarters," Popovich said, "and they played hard and deserved to win the game."

Despite owning the NBA's second-worst record, the Celtics haven't seemed too intent on trying to better position themselves for the NBA's draft lottery. They entered Saturday with six victories in their past 10 games and nearly upset Dallas on Friday night.

Boston apparently took more fuel than satisfaction from its near-miss against the Mavericks. The Celtics made 10 of their first 13 shots, and the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) didn't find the other end of the floor any easier going.

Looking like the dead-legged team Boston was supposed to resemble while playing its fourth game in five nights, the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) set a season low with 15 points in the first quarter.

Celtics guard Delonte West, who scored 23 points after spending much of the day sick in his hotel room, put the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) in a 15-point hole early in the second quarter. The Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) drew within 45-40 at halftime only to watch the Celtics open the second half much like the first.

The Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) didn't take their first rebound of the second half until only 5:18 remained in the third quarter. With a little more than three minutes remaining in the quarter, Rajon Rondo, the Celtics' long-armed point guard, had 13 rebounds, just one fewer than the Spurs' starting five had collected up to that point.

"That was just a bad start for whatever reason," Duncan said. "I don't have an explanation for any of that. It was what it was.

"It comes to the fourth quarter, and we have a chance to win or lose it, and it just didn't go our way."

The Celtics know the feeling.

Ginobili lays blame on Spurs' confidence

Calling the Spurs' performance in their last three games a big step backward with the playoffs looming, guard Manu Ginobili (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/manu_ginobili) challenged his teammates to stop being cocky and forget their 13-game winning streak that seemed to breed overconfidence.

"Nobody gives a (damn) about those 13 games," Ginobili said after the Boston Celtics beat the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) 91-85 at AT&T Center on Saturday. "We've really got to start doing things better and be more humble."

Just as coach Gregg Popovich warned when the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) struggled Tuesday against the Los Angeles Clippers in what turned out to be consecutive victory No. 13, a lack of focus and mental intensity caused the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) to suffer their first back-to-back losses in nearly five weeks.

"I think the three games are a step back," Ginobili said. "We beat the Clippers, but we didn't play good at all. We've really got to go back to play the way we were playing two weeks ago."

After a loss in Milwaukee on Thursday and a practice on Friday, Ginobili expected the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) to open Saturday's game aggressively and crisply. Instead, they missed their first five shots and trailed by 10 after just 6:35 had been played.

"I really can't understand it," Ginobili said. "We started very slow. We came back and brought the game to five, and then we started the third quarter again with a 10-0 (Celtics) run. We can't allow that to happen. We've got to step out and play with more aggressiveness, knowing that we've got 16 games to the playoffs. We should be in way better shape."

It wasn't hard to pinpoint one reason for the Spurs' struggles at the outset of both the first and third quarters: horrid shooting. They made only 6 of 19 shots in the first period, only 7 of 21 in the third. For the game they made only 1 of 17 3-pointers.

No Spur struggled more thoroughly with his shot than Bruce Bowen (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/bruce_bowen), who missed 7 of 8 shots and clanked both his 3-point attempts. He even air-balled a layup on a four-on-one fast break.

"What a time to struggle," Bowen said. "There's one thing in struggles: You don't want somebody to start shooting shots they're not capable of making or start trying to do too much. I missed shots that I'm capable of making tonight. But of all nights, I knew I'd get shots tonight, and that's usually enough to make you feel good. I got them and just didn't do well with them."

Bowen also committed a key crunch time turnover, losing the ball as he started a dribble from the top of the key with the score tied at 85.

"I pump-faked a pass into Tim and (Gerald Green) jumped," Bowen said, "so I had that whole lane in front of me. I want to see the replay of what happened. I know he had a hand on the ball, but how did he get a hand in? Was he riding me? That's all I want to see."

Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) notebook: Popovich still managing minutes

The Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) entered Saturday with all of their players averaging less than 35 minutes, keeping with coach Gregg Popovich's goal of not wanting to overwork the team before the playoffs.
Tim Duncan (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/tim_duncan) was averaging a team-high 34.5 minutes and just two others — Tony Parker (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/tony_parker) and Bruce Bowen (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/bruce_bowen) — were playing as many as 30 per game.

Dallas lost twice this past week and Detroit beat Phoenix on Friday, but that hasn't changed Popovich's tact.

"We haven't really focused on getting the best record in any year," Popovich said. "Some years we've gotten it, some years we haven't, but it's never been the focus. The focus has always been making sure our priorities are in order, beginning with defense, that we're as healthy as we can possibly be and that our bench has gotten enough minutes to be comfortable come playoff time.

"With that philosophy it helps to not play starters an inordinate number of minutes to win games early at the expense of burning those guys out and not developing the bench the way it probably needs to be come playoff time."

Luck of the Celtics: The Boston Celtics had the greatest odds of landing the No. 1 draft pick entering the 1997 lottery only to see the Spurs (http://www.chinaspurs.com) win the right to take Tim Duncan (http://www.chinaspurs.com/players/tim_duncan).

With Boston entering Saturday with the NBA's second-worst record and two franchise-altering players (Ohio State's Greg Oden and Texas' Kevin Durant) possibly in this summer's draft, the Celtics would benefit from a change of lottery luck.

"That would be the fair thing," Popovich said of Boston possibly securing the No. 1 pick 10 years after it lost its chance at Duncan. "That would mean there is some fairness in an unfair world."

Fresh as a shamrock: Who says NBA referees don't have a sense of humor?

Veteran referee Bob Delaney called Popovich and Celtics coach Doc Rivers to the scorer's table before Saturday's tipoff and presented each coach with a box of "Paddy O'Connell's Instant Irish Accent" breath mints.

The mints, the box containing them assured, would make the breath "fresh on the tongue like mists off the Cliffs of Mohr."

"I told them if they intended to argue with me tonight, I at least wanted their breath to be Irish fresh," said Delaney.

Curiously, the breath mints were not green, but yellow.
