Ginobili's 40 boost Spurs: Guard scores 24-straight to help sink Hawks

ATLANTA — Manu Ginobili scored a season-high 40 points, including 24 in a row during one first-half stretch, and Tim Duncan added 30 as the Spurs held off the Atlanta Hawks 103-96 Wednesday night at Philips Arena for their fourth consecutive victory.

The Spurs blew a 14-point lead in the second half, but stayed composed in the fourth quarter. Brent Barry added 18 points, including a key 3-pointer late in the game.

Joe Johnson led the Hawks with 30 points and Zaza Pachulia had 23.

Ginobili's total was the most by a Spur this season and matched his second highest with the team. The only time he scored more was when he went for 48 in an overtime victory against Phoenix on Jan. 21, 2005.

Both teams had played the previous night and looked like they were playing on heavy legs. Ginobili was one of the few exceptions.

After checking into the game midway through the first quarter, Ginobili finished an acrobatic drive with 2:27 left for his first basket. It wouldn't be his last.

Ginobili followed with two more layups and a pair of free throws to give him the Spurs' final eight points of the quarter. And he was only warming up.

Ginobili opened the second quarter by driving for a three-point play. Then he followed with a pull-up in the lane. The next time down the floor, he raced to the basket, absorbed a bump from Josh Smith and flipped in a shot with his back almost turned to the basket.

At one point, Ginobili had outscored the Hawks 24-23 by himself.

Spurs point guard Tony Parker, who had made only one of his previous 10 shots, drilled a 20-footer to hike the Spurs' lead to 91-82 with 3:51 left. Waiting at the scorer's table to check in, Ginobili pumped his fist in celebration. After Atlanta closed within five, Barry hit a clutch 3-pointer and Parker followed with a fast-break layup.

Duncan's tip-in at the second-quarter buzzer gave Spurs a 52-43 lead at the half.

Perhaps feeling the effects of a long All-Star weekend, Parker labored as much as he has all season. He had just two points and three fouls in 10 first-half minutes, and Popovich began the third quarter with Jacque Vaughn on the floor in Parker's place.

Atlanta trailed by 14 with less than seven minutes left in the third quarter. But with Parker unable to hit a shot or do much of anything else and Zaza Pachulia bruising the Spurs inside, the Hawks tied the game at 70 at the end of the quarter.

Atlanta's pair of 6-foot-9 athletic forwards, Josh Smith and Marvin Williams, created matchup problems for the Spurs' big men. Francisco Elson picked up four fouls in his first eight minutes and Fabricio Oberto went to the bench with his fifth a little more than midway through the third quarter.

Hoping to rest Robert Horry on the second night of a back-to-back, Popovich used Matt Bonner to fill in.

Ginobili runs spark Spurs: Reserve's 24-straight points and his fourth-quarter push help sink Hawks

Web Posted: 02/22/2007 12:05 AM CST

Johnny Ludden
Express-News

ATLANTA — When Spurs coach Gregg Popovich decided to move Manu Ginobili to the bench two weeks ago, he explained the lineup change by saying he hoped the frenetic guard would give the team's reserve unit a jolt of energy, a little punch and some much-needed consistency.

And if Ginobili just so happened to occasionally pour in 40 points or even decide to reel off 24 in a row, well, all the better.

Ginobili did all that and more in Wednesday's 103-96 victory over the Atlanta Hawks, taking over the game with an electric 4-minute, 47-second stretch in the first half, then helping rescue the Spurs in the fourth quarter.

Tim Duncan added 30 points as the Spurs escaped Philips Arena with a rare victory and extended their winning streak to four games, but the evening belonged to Ginobili. His 40 points were the most by a Spur this season and matched his second-most ever with the team, eclipsed only by the 48 he scored in an overtime victory against Phoenix on Jan. 21, 2005.

The 24 consecutive points Ginobili ran off in the first half — a run that had his slack-jawed teammates standing and cheering from the bench — also broke George Gervin's longstanding franchise record of 23 in a row set on April 9, 1978.

"Manu was obviously pretty special," Popovich said. "He does everything a little differently than most players.

"I don't even know what he's going to do half the time. I just watch like you all do."

Ginobili's performance also almost went for naught. With Joe Johnson leading the Hawks with 30 points and Zaza Pachulia adding 23, the Spurs surrendered a 14-point lead in the third quarter.

After Atlanta tied the score at 70 to start the fourth, Popovich gave his weary team a message.

"We're playing one quarter," Popovich said. "Next week, next game, next year, playoffs — nothing matters except this quarter."

Ginobili then took the floor, made a pair of free throws, bounced in a 3-pointer and buried a 16-foot fadeaway. The Spurs never relinquished the lead and gained their second victory in the past five trips to Atlanta.

"He was incredible," Duncan said.

Duncan wasn't too bad, either. He made 11 of 16 shots and scored 17 of his points in the second half.

"I don't care how you cut it," Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "When you have a low-post player like Duncan, it just makes it tough on any team."

The Spurs needed both Duncan and Ginobili to help compensate for Tony Parker's rough night.

Bothered by tendinitis in his right knee and tired from a long All-Star weekend, Parker labored as much as he has all season. He had just two points and three fouls in 10 first-half minutes and Popovich began the third quarter with Jacque Vaughn on the floor in place of Parker.

Parker missed nine of his first 10 shots (and finished 3 for 14), but buried a clutch jumper that hiked the Spurs' lead to 91-82 with 3:51 left.

"That," Popovich said, "really showed his experience and maturity."

Brent Barry scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and the Spurs made 29 of 32 free throws (90.6 percent) to hold off the Hawks.

Both teams looked tired from having played the previous night — until Ginobili stepped onto the court.

Ginobili scored the Spurs' final eight points of the first quarter then continued his surge into the second. On the Spurs' next six possessions, he: drove for a three-point play; made a pull-up jumper; raced to the basket, absorbed a bump and foul from Josh Smith and flipped in a shot with his back turned; buried a 3-pointer; drove for another layup; and pump-faked Marvin Williams into the air for a foul that led to three more free throws.

"I started feeling well and Pop started calling every single play for me," Ginobili said. "All of them worked."

With 9:40 left in the second quarter, the scoreboard read Ginobili 24, Hawks 23.

"What's awesome is when you're a road team and you have a guy get going like that," Barry said. "Then you start to hear the home crowd start to cheer for that guy.

"Even though they're rooting for their team, they kind of love to see individual performances like that happen. You buy a ticket and you get to see something special."

* * *
GINOBILI'S RUN

Manu Ginobili came off the bench with 6:46 left in the first quarter and scored 24-straight points for the Spurs against the Hawks on Wednesday.

2:27 -- when he scored his first basket

24-9 -- Spurs run that was all Ginobili

8 of 11 -- field goals

7 of 7 -- free throws

40 -- New season-high point total

Spurs notebook: Udrih draws interest, but likely won't be dealt

ATLANTA — The Spurs certainly haven't been acting like a team wanting to sit out this afternoon's trade deadline.

With several teams looking for help at point guard, one Western Conference official said Beno Udrih's name was in heavy circulation Wednesday night.

While the Spurs aren't looking to dump Udrih — coach Gregg Popovich called him a "great insurance policy" — they would trade him in the right deal.

The team has looked at contingency plans to obtain another point guard should Udrih be moved. Atlanta, which is trying to obtain a veteran point guard in a separate deal, spoke to the Spurs about swapping Royal Ivey for a second-round pick.

One official said there is a scenario where the Spurs would have interest in acquiring the former Texas Longhorn, but called such a trade "unlikely."

The Spurs also continue to explore trade opportunities for Jackie Butler.

Philadelphia executive Larry Brown, who coached Butler in New York last season and recommended him to the Spurs, has again shown interest in the young center. The 76ers seemed willing to do a trade if they also could get a draft pick, but the Spurs didn't like the contract Philadelphia was offering (possibly Kevin Ollie's) in return.

Spurs officials continue to say if they do make a move today it likely would be a minor one similar to last week's trade for Melvin Ely.

Udrih said his agent told him teams have shown interest in him, but he doesn't have a good feel for whether he'll be traded.

"I'm just trying not to worry about it," Udrih said. "It's not in my hands. It's in the (the Spurs') hands."

Udrih hasn't played much in the past two weeks since Popovich elevated Jacque Vaughn to the backup role.

"I just think Jacque is doing a really good job of showing leadership out on the court," Popovich said before Tuesday's game against Denver. "Our team has reacted well to him. He's a really tough competitor.

"I think at this particular time this team needs that coming off the bench. He's provided that for us."

But Popovich also likes having Udrih available if needed.

"He's a great insurance policy," Popovich said. "He's a skilled guy. He can shoot the basketball, he can pass the basketball."

Parker ailing: Tony Parker said the tendinitis in his right knee that bothered him late last season has resurfaced.

Parker struggled Wednesday, making only 3 of 14 shots for six points. He also got hit on the side of his left knee in the first half, but returned.

"I had no lift," Parker said. "I just have to be disciplined and do my treatments and stay on it. It's been for like two weeks now, so I have to keep working on it."

Horry rests: With Matt Bonner back, Popovich opted to rest Robert Horry on Wednesday as he's previously done on the second night of back-to-backs. [url=https://www.chinaspurs.com/players/matt_bonner][url=https://www.chinaspurs.com/players/matt_bonner]Bonner had one point and two rebounds in 12 minutes.

Atlanta's pair of 6-foot-9 athletic forwards, Josh Smith and Marvin Williams, created matchup problems for the Spurs' other big men. Francisco Elson picked up four fouls in his first eight minutes and Fabricio Oberto went to the bench with his fifth in the third quarter.

"They were aggressive and physical," Popovich said. "We were fortunate to get out of here with a win."

Buck Harvey: Worst thing for hoops, or for Knight?

http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/basketball/nba/spurs/stories/MYSA022207.01D.COL.BKCharvey.freshmen.17a2515.html

Web Posted: 02/22/2007 12:13 AM CST
San Antonio Express-News

Bob Knight says he wouldn't want players such as Kevin Durant this season, and some coaches, such as Doc Rivers, would agree.

Rivers wants players such as Durant NEXT season. The lottery may give him one.

Otherwise Knight stands alone with first-rate principles and second-rate talent. He said this week he wouldn't recruit those who are destined for the NBA after one year of college, and he didn't stop there. He called the one-and-done syndrome "the worst thing that's happened to college basketball since I've been coaching."

That's saying something. A guy going to college for a year is worse than the Dave Bliss days at Baylor?

To be fair, Knight has a point; the NBA age limit could mean a handful of players go to college and never open a book. But Knight not only exaggerates the situation, he's also not the one to be condemning it.

After all, Knight doesn't have to worry about players such as Durant lining up at his door. They don't want him, either.

They say Knight wasn't pointing at Durant, but the timing suggests otherwise. He made this declaration as Texas Tech prepared to play Durant in Austin on Tuesday. Furthermore, the last time the schools played, Durant put on one of his draft-me games. Durant had 37 points and 23 rebounds.

Durant's father says it's not certain his son will go pro this spring, but most think Durant will. Most also think the only reason Durant didn't enter the draft last year was because of the new NBA age requirement that Knight calls "ridiculous."

From Knight: "You can have a kid come to school for a year and play basketball and he doesn't even have to go to class. He certainly doesn't have to go to class the second semester. I'm not exactly positive about the first semester."

Rick Barnes denies that's the case with Durant, and he says he wouldn't recruit anyone who wanted that. But what Knight says is true, and his commitment to academic integrity is also unquestioned.

This season he booted his best player, Jarrius Jackson, off the team because he quit going to class. Knight took him back only when Jackson changed.

But academic abuses happen with or without the NBA. Graduation rates have been low at a lot of programs, and Tech knows firsthand about a star using the system. In 1996 Tech played in the Alamo Bowl, and its All-American runner, Byron Hanspard, arrived with a 0.00 grade-point average for the semester.

Hanspard wasn't one-and-done. He was a junior that season.

The Tech basketball program would later endure a systemic meltdown, with an investigation that uncovered 18 serious rules violations. Knight, under his watch, would never let a similar thing happen.

But he's also on the verge of not making the NCAA tournament in the same season he passed Dean Smith in wins, and that sums up the kind of schizophrenic season he's had. Knight beat Kansas once and the Aggies twice, and yet he has collapsed against teams such as Nebraska.

Argue whether it's superior coaching that resulted in the upsets or awful coaching because Tech couldn't sustain its success. Either way, it might be Knight's most uneven season ever.

But this shouldn't be surprising considering what he works with. The only Durant-kind of player he ever had is Isiah Thomas, who left after his sophomore season at Indiana.

Otherwise, Knight has an inherent disadvantage against, for example, Barnes. The record certainly shows that; Knight is now 2-12 against the Longhorns, his worst record against any team in his career.

And maybe that's why he ranted this week. Knight won't recruit the stars, and the stars wouldn't play for him even if he did recruit them. He'd rather they would all go straight to the pros, but they can't now. And one, Durant, helped beat him again Tuesday.

One-and-done is a problem for him, all right. Especially when it refers to a quick postseason exit.
