马刺官方网站专访波波维奇

One-on-One with Coach Pop

Spurs.com's John Robbins caught up with Spurs' head coach Gregg Popovich for an exclusive and candid one-on-one interview.

John Robbins: It's been a very busy summer Pop, can you go into specifics on what a few of these guys bring into the team and what you hope to get out of them?

Coach Pop: Richard (Jefferson) is an all-around player, he is going to be a big-time player for us. We expect him to score and rebound, play D - the whole ball of wax.

He is a very talented young man and that was our main priority to add a wing that has his ability, so we got much deeper talent-wise with his arrival. And that's what we hope we get.

JR: DeJuan Blair, what have you seen out of him so far?

Coach Pop: Well obviously, as he showed in college and Las Vegas, he is a very good rebounder and is a very hard worker. As he progresses with the NBA players we'll see how that skill transfers, but like any other rookie he has a lot to learn and as he becomes familiar with the system we'll find out how much he can help the team.

JR: Antonio McDyess.

Coach Pop: Antonio is like Richard, he's a big-time addition professionally to have a mature player who has playoff experience, who makes us deeper as far as scoring is concerned. He is a tough defender and a really, really solid guy.

JR: Theo Ratliff.

Coach Pop: Theo is someone, like Antonio allows us to add a veteran to the team who is a class act, who is a shot blocker, who gives us length. We don't really have that in our other players except for Timmy, so Theo's ability to play D and block shots and rebound, is a really good addition for us.

JR: What triggered all of these moves, obviously there are some major pieces left intact, but what was the motivation to go out and make these trades and sign these guys?

Coach Pop: Well each year is different, when Timmy, Manu and Tony were all young and Bruce (Bowen) was younger and all that we just looked for pieces every year. People that fit in, in different spots. You know Bruce played defense for us and Stephen Jackson was an offensive guy for us and Speedy Claxton was a backup for Tony and Mario (Elie) and Steve Kerr did this, that type of thing.

But as Timmy got older and as Bruce got to 38 and Manu got injured the last couple of years in the playoffs we realized that we had to add more than just pieces. So that was the motivation. To go out and get the talent of Richard Jefferson and the depth of Theo and Antonio, that kind of thing.

JR: You brought up Tony, he's only 27 years old but he has really come into his own. He's in his prime right now, what do you see for him in the future?

Coach Pop: Well he is going to continue to play at an All-Star level. He'll become a better shooter as each year passes. He's put a lot of work in on it, he was better last year and he'll be even better this year. And leadership-wise he'll start to take over more and more.

So in those two areas that's where he'll grow the most.

JR: The team starts with Tim, what makes him so special?

Coach Pop: I think with Timmy it starts with intrinsic qualities that he has. He is a selfless, hardworking, highly competitive individual to begin with. When you add a 6-11 basketball frame that is long and lean, that helps.

He has beautiful coordination, great hands, soft hands, a great feel for the game, wonderful skills as far as scoring, shooting passing, he enjoys playing defense, he understands the game, he does things to help win games and he's a wonderful teammate.

You know just all those things combined make him very, very special.

JR: You spoke a bit about Manu's health and said he is doing well and not doing too much basketball related stuff just yet, how essential is his health to the team?

Coach Pop: It is a primary importance. Manu Ginobili has been an integral part of our championships and as you could see last year without him we're not the same team. He is very, very important to us.

JR: With all the new pieces this year how much can you really do before they get on the court and start playing together and you see what type of chemistry they have?

Coach Pop: As far as chemistry is concerned nothing, that'll just develop. They'll get to know each other on and off the court in different activities we have, both basketball-wise and community-wise.

They'll learn to respect each other and come together as a family hopefully.

JR: Finally Pop, what are the challenges year in and year out for you? And what are the differences in those challenges?

Coach Pop: I think the challenges in a generic sense are always the same. We want to create an environment to win a championship here in San Antonio, so in some ways that doesn't change.

We have to make sure our team fits together skill-wise, personality-wise, manage people as much as Os and Xs and we have to make sure we're healthy as best we can. We have to also make sure that players know their roles, that's always very important.

The challenges each year in that sense don't really change, but when you have different people that becomes a challenge. To learn about them quickly and put them together in a way that fits.
