那个太长了……新开个

Playoff Preparation

by Sam Presti, Spurs Assistant G.M.
April 22, 2006

With the post-season set to begin I thought it would be a good time to look at how teams across the league prepare for what is hopefully a long run in the play-offs...

Each team spends thousands of hours a year on advance scouting, this is the form of scouting that is focused solely on the X's and O's. Advanced scouts are the guys that can tell you what "Double X Red Zipper 45" means when Gilbert Arenas calls the play while running up court, or what out-of-bounds play a team likes to run in the second quarter if they are down by six or more points. Think about it, these guys have every play-book in the league crammed into their memories and can call each play up in milliseconds; the best guys can tell you which side of the floor the team is more successful from with each call as well. A lot of the job is almost detective-oriented. They are using their eyes to look for hand signals as well as the formation and spacing of the actual play, their ears for the actual play call, and their hands to diagram everything out so that the following morning an assistant coach can decode the whole report as if he were at the game himself…

So, all this work and nights of travel by the advanced scout culminates into part of the preparation that our coaches undertake for the post-season. The trick here is of course that some teams could be playing any one of a few teams in the first round....you guessed it: Three different preps are needed in these cases...As the post-season unfolds, teams are always preparing for both opponents that they could face if they are fortunate enough to advance. Luckily, advanced scouts are on the road all year long preparing their teams for every upcoming opponent and normally see a team two or three times prior to when their team is scheduled to play them…that’s a lot of times to figure out if Cleveland is better running “Hawk Triple 61 Slash” with LeBron or Larry Hughes at the point...Luckily for us we have Mike Wells working on all of our advanced scouting and he does a great job. Mike’s job is a grind, he travels to the city of the game during the day, scouts the game in the evening and then files his report late into the night once he gets back to the hotel and puts it into a format that can be sent to our offices though cyberspace…the next morning, he’s off to another NBA city to work on another team.

Another aspect to post season preparation is born in the video room. The video room is a land of long hours and blurry eyes. These guys are responsible for breaking each opponent down both as a team and as individuals. Their effort works in symmetry with the advance scout so that what is developed in written and diagramed form comes to life on video for both the players and the coaches. From here, the coaches will be able to evaluate how each opponent played us during the regular season, and who was successful playing them and why? We use an enormous amount of computer technology in the video room in today’s NBA, things are a lot different now than they were when I started in there in 2000. My basic vocabulary was: VHS, Play and Record…and of course accepting the brutal reality that setting the timer on all VCR’s is like having to complete a Rubic’s cube blindfolded…

Moving on, the video room tapes an average of 30 NBA and college games per night, and loads each play of our upcoming opponents games into a system that can categorize and “break down” the game into a format that can be sorted in various ways. We can call up all of our upcoming opponents “middle pick and roll action” from the three games prior in seconds, or we can sort by time, player, play call, side of the floor, etc…The guy in charge of this for us is James Borrego, and he is assisted by Brian Keefe and Steve Hetzel. Working in the video room requires a lot of tech and basketball savvy as well as patience and attention to detail. The work from this room moves the process on to the coaches, who themselves have been pouring over different forms of film study and information before they get the opponent “breakdown tapes.” From here a game plan is constructed and communicated to the guys on the floor…

The coaches really hammer down to look for tendencies, trends and counters to employ in real time. However, at the end of the day, each team walks into their series with a total grasp of their opponent right down to play calls, hand signals and individual tendencies in each set. There is an old saying: there are no secrets in the play-offs after Game One. Maybe a team can sneak a few wrinkles into the game plan but at the end of the day teams want to do what they are best at and generally what got them into the Post Season.....now you have to find a way to stop it.

Something to look for in a play-off series are the adjustments and counters that each team will look to make from game to game and, at times, from half to half. It may be a specific match-up that one team is looking to exploit or adjust to, or perhaps the way one team is choosing to defend the sideline pick and roll. Even substitution patterns can be tweaked as a form of strategy...The preparation for a series is intense and very detail-oriented but ultimately each team's advanced work is minimized by great players performing at the highest level of play. At the end of the day the game is about the world’s best athletes matching skills, and wills as a team committed to one goal.

So these are just a few things to consider as the post season gets under way, hopefully it will give you a better idea as to the preparation that gets each team ready for their run at the NBA Championship...

Thanks again for all of the wonderful support of our team and organization....

Spurs-Kings notebook: Artest's hard foul under league review

The NBA is reviewing whether Ron Artest's foul on Manu Ginobili in Saturday's game warrants being upgraded to a flagrant violation, a league official said Sunday.

Artest hit Ginobili in the side of the face with his forearm early in the third quarter of the Spurs' 122-88 victory. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich immediately complained to the officials that Artest deserved a flagrant foul.

If the foul is upgraded to a flagrant 1 penalty, Artest could receive a small fine, if that. In the less likely event the league decided to change it to a flagrant 2 foul, Artest could be suspended for Tuesday's game.

When deciding whether to reclassify a foul or levy a fine and/or suspension, the NBA weighs: the severity of the foul; whether the foul led to an altercation; and the level of the injury sustained by the player who was fouled. Given that Ginobili wasn't seriously injured, it seems unlikely Artest would be given a flagrant 2 penalty.

Players are allowed to accumulate three flagrant points during the playoffs. Their fourth and subsequent points bring an automatic ejection.

Artest, who also hit Tim Duncan in the back of the head on one trip down the floor, took his share of punishment. On the game's opening possession, Ginobili elbowed him in the face while chasing the ball.

Artest needed three stitches to close the cut on his lip. He declined to talk to reporters Sunday for the second day in a row, citing the injury.

Different approaches: While Popovich gave the Spurs Sunday off, Sacramento coach Rick Adelman put his team through a two-hour film session followed by an hour-long practice.

Adelman thought it was important the Kings see the mistakes they made Saturday on film.

"We were very explicit with what went on," Adelman said. "They're the world champs, and they turned it up a notch — a big notch.

"You either respond to that or you don't ... I think they'll respond."

The Spurs will practice this afternoon.

No apologies necessary: If the Kings took offense to Nazr Mohammed's insult-on-top-of-injury 3-pointer in the closing seconds of Saturday's loss, they weren't letting on about it.

After Mohammed made the 3-pointer, the second of his career, he received a lengthy tongue-lashing from Popovich, who didn't want to give the Kings any reason to feel disrespected.

But Sacramento guard Mike Bibby said Mohammed's shot was understandable because the shot clock was winding down, and other Kings said they had bigger things to worry about than a garbage-time basket.

"The 30 points they beat us by was disrespectful," forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim "I'm more concerned with that than (Mohammed) hitting the 3."

Simply stated: It didn't take a genius for the Kings to determine why they were outrebounded badly in Game1 and what it will take to turn things around in Game2.

"We just have to rebound harder," starting guard Bonzi Wells said. "That's it. We've got to go get them. We thought somebody else was going to get them in the first game."

Kings say trusting each other is key to improving defense

Upon their return to the scene of the previous evening's indignity, the Sacramento Kings learned Sunday they were no more adept at stopping Tony Parker from darting across an AT&T Center video screen than they were at keeping him from scampering up and down an AT&T Center basketball court.

But as the tape session dragged on — with the Kings forced to relive every embarrassing moment of their playoff-opening 122-88 loss to the Spurs — some players learned there was a lesson amid the misery.

"It was enlightening, really," Kings forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim said. "Sometimes you think you're doing better than what you actually did ... I don't think we realized we were as bad as we were."

In no area was that idea more apparent than in the Kings' defensive effort against Parker, who torched Sacramento for 23 first-half points on 9-of-11 shooting.

He outran the Kings in the open floor. He got to the rim any time he wanted. He found plenty of time and space to hit open jumpers.

And according to the Kings' Mike Bibby, Parker took advantage of Sacramento's reluctance to help on defense. One day after Bonzi Wells lamented that the Kings left their point guard "on an island," Bibby sounded ready to fire off emergency flares in hopes of being rescued.

"We need to get back to trusting each other," Bibby said. "I'm gonna help you, and somebody's got to help me. We've got to have that trust, and we didn't have it last game. Maybe (the other Kings players) don't want their man to score, I don't know."

The way Bibby explained it, some Kings defenders were so focused on their individual defensive assignments that they neglected to rotate when Parker penetrated.

"It's like a chain reaction," Bibby said. "Everybody's got to have faith that, 'If I leave my man, then somebody's going to rotate to my man.' I think they felt like, 'If I leave, I don't want my man to score.'"

In a sign that there might be hope for the Kings, Bibby wasn't the only Sacramento player Sunday preaching the need for better help defense. Post defenders Brad Miller and Kenny Thomas said they need to be more willing to leave the Spurs' big men when Parker slips into the lane.

"We need to help each other out," Thomas said. "We need to keep our eyes on the ball instead of keeping our eyes on our man."

Said Kings coach Rick Adelman: "When Parker came off pick-and-rolls or (Manu) Ginobili drove, we weren't getting after him. We were kind of letting him do this thing, then react to it. That's not how it's going to work. Those guys are too good."

Before the series, the Kings talked about the need to defend Parker by using the same principles they use against the Suns' Steve Nash. Adelman explained that although Nash prefers to pass and Parker is more of a scorer, the point guards are similar in the way they use their quickness to get inside and force interior defenders to react.

On Sunday, Adelman said the Kings need to do a better job of hounding Parker once he starts to drive.

"You have to get in his vision," Adelman said. "You can't let him think he has an angle or a gap to attack to — he's too quick. But he got to the basket a number of times, and, yeah, he beat his guy, and we were very slow reacting."

And if the defense against Parker doesn't improve? For the Kings, at least there's a bright side.

As Bibby said, "It can't get any worse than it was."

Spurs' reserves providing punch

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich rose from his sideline chair halfway through Saturday's first quarter, looked down at the mix of former All-Stars, sharpshooters and Slovenians sitting on the bench and called for Michael Finley.

Less than a minute later, Popovich sent Robert Horry to the scorer's table. Nick Van Exel joined Finley and Horry on the floor for the start of the second quarter. Brent Barry followed. Then came Rasho Nesterovic.

The second quarter was barely four minutes old, and Popovich already had used 10 players.

At a time when many teams shorten their rotations, the Spurs used their playoff-opening victory over Sacramento to show off their depth. The bench accounted for 52 of the team's 122 points while no starter played more than 25 minutes.

"They've got guys who have been proven scorers in this league," Kings guard Bonzi Wells said. "Nick Van Exel has a history in this league of making big baskets. Michael Finley is a career playoff guy who has made big baskets. Brent Barry, too.

"Those guys can all play, and they do a great job of putting them in spots where they can be effective. And I didn't even mention Horry. How crazy is that?"

The Spurs' reserves have left more than a few opponents scratching their heads in frustration. In the three-game winning streak to end the regular season, the bench averaged 60.7 points.

Popovich's decision to play reserves heavily down the stretch, Horry thinks, allowed them to be better prepared Saturday. Van Exel scored 11 points in his first seven minutes. In the first half, Van Exel, Finley, Horry and Barry combined to make 6 of 8 3-pointers.

"It's a lot easier to get in a rhythm if you're playing minutes," Horry said.

A few of the Spurs' reserves also needed the extra time to loosen their creaky joints. The average age of the seven players who made up the team's bench Saturday was 31.3 years.

While younger, athletic teams have given the Spurs problems, owning a pension-eligible bench does provide some advantages — namely, 420 games of playoff experience the reserves brought with them Saturday.

"You can just tell, even the guys who have been starters their whole career, none of those guys care who scores," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "It's just a matter of them winning. It's a great thing to have, and it's even better when their skills haven't diminished to the point where they can't do anything, and obviously they haven't.

"It's tough because they have tremendous experience off the bench, and we have very little."

Adelman primarily has used three reserves the past few weeks: swingman Kevin Martin, power forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim and point guard Jason Hart. Of the three, only Hart had any previous playoff experience before Saturday, and his was limited to seven games with the Spurs two years ago.

By the end of last season's NBA Finals, Popovich had pared the Spurs' rotation to seven players, using only Horry and Barry off the bench. As a result, the team made it a priority to find a veteran backup for Tony Parker (Van Exel) and a more dependable scorer (Finley).

While the Spurs' bench has only one pair of young legs (Beno Udrih's) this season, the group is versatile. And Popovich's longtime "Pop-a-sub" method to handling reserves means the rotation sometimes will change game by game according to matchups.

"That's the one thing about (Popovich)," Hart said. "He will use the players on his bench, at any time in the game."

Finley, Horry and Van Exel have fairly defined roles. Barry also has carved out some minutes the second half of the season. Popovich even included Nesterovic in his big-man rotation Saturday.

"If we need instant scoring, Nick can get in the game," Barry said. "If you want to space the floor and there's a physical guard out there, Michael can play. If they're playing a little bit small, Beno and I can get minutes. If they go big, Rasho is over there, a guy who started a lot of games for this ball club and can mix it up.

"It's a great problem to have. There are a lot of coaches in this league who would love to try and deal with that if they could."

Spurs-Kings notebook: Popovich lauds Mavs' Johnson

Avery Johnson was named the NBA's Coach of the Year on Tuesday, and one of his former mentors couldn't be happier.

"I'm thrilled to observe Avery's success because he's been many things to me," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He's been a great friend, a great player, and he's obviously established himself as somebody who can coach the game.

"To watch his progress over this short year and a half is just amazing."

Johnson was one of the first players Popovich signed after he took over as general manager in 1994. He played under Popovich from 1996-2001 and hit the shot to clinch the Spurs' first championship in 1999.

Popovich used to call Johnson his "coach on the floor" and never had any doubt he would make a successful transition to the bench. Johnson took over as Dallas' coach late last season after Don Nelson resigned.

"His love of the game over the years was exhibited by what he gained from each coach he played for and every player he played with or against," said Popovich, who finished sixth in the Coach of the Year balloting. "He has a natural affinity for the game. He understands how the game works, he understands what wins, he understands what's fluff and what should be ignored.

"He also has the persistence and the mental toughness to drag a team his way, to have them do what he thinks is best. He won't give up. If somebody else doesn't buy in, they'll have to figure out what to do."

Popovich and Johnson remain close and talk frequently. So how did Johnson thank his friend?

"Nellie was tremendous in helping lay the foundation for me. I learned a tremendous amount from him," Johnson said. "And the coach down south, who's one of the sorriest coaches in basketball, I worked with him, too."

Old man and the rim: Tim Duncan turned 30 on Tuesday, and at least one of his teammates thinks the days of shuffleboard and prune juice can't be far ahead.

"He's the same age as Eva (Longoria)," Tony Parker said. "That's old."

Rookie guard Melvin Sanders brought Duncan cupcakes and other treats at the Spurs' morning shootaround and sang "Happy Birthday" to him.

"He's trying to get an extended contract, so he figured the best way to do that was to be Timmy's best friend," Popovich said. "So he actually baked for him. We told him it was sad and almost depraved to watch the extent to which he would suck up for a contract. He has no pride whatsoever."

Mohammed's rare 3-pointer: Nazr Mohammed made the second 3-pointer of his career near the end of Saturday's game. After the piercing rebuke it earned him from Popovich, it also may be the last one he takes.

"I think it will most likely be a cold day in hell before Nazr shoots another three," Popovich said. "That's just a guess."

Kings pick up Artest slack: The absence of Ron Artest didn't only mean other Kings players had increased responsibilities. Bonzi Wells said the impact was felt all the way down the Sacramento bench.

"Coach (Rick Adelman) even has to pick it up," Wells said, "because Ron is like a coach on the floor."

Artest's one-game suspension will cost him $62,201 in salary.

Officially clean: After Spurs point guard Tony Parker was upended by Sacramento's Jason Hart, landing hard on the court with 3:54 remaining in the first quarter, veteran referee Dick Bavetta directed the ball boys to spend extra time to clean moisture off the floor in several areas, clearly a move designed to give Parker time to catch his breath.

Punking Jalen: Knicks guard Jalen Rose worked the game as a sideline reporter for the TNT television network.

While Rose was doing a live report during a timeout on the baseline next to the Spurs' bench, one of the Spurs threw a towel at him from behind, draping it perfectly over Rose's head. Rose reached up and removed the towel without missing a word of his report.

"I know it was Nick," Rose said, accusing Spurs veteran guard Nick Van Exel.

Kings' Bibby falters in clutch after briefly shaking slump

As the Sacramento Kings huddled before the start of the fourth quarter Tuesday night at the AT&T Center, coach Rick Adelman consulted with his assistants, scribbled on his clipboard and barked out strategic adjustments.

Mike Bibby, meanwhile, was doing a little analysis of his own. With five Spurs fans on the court trying to pick the key that would win them a new Harley-Davidson, the Kings guard was sure he had the contest figured out.

"It's in the first bag," Bibby said. "It's the first one."

When Bibby's chosen key slipped into the ignition and brought the motorcycle to life, Bibby nodded and smiled. But unfortunately for Sacramento, he didn't have as much luck revving up his own game in the Kings' 128-119 overtime loss to the Spurs.

One game after being run ragged by Tony Parker on the defensive end of the court, Bibby had a miserable night on offense. Even though he finished with 15 points, Bibby missed 12 of his first 13 shots and finished the night only 3 of 16 from the field.

And on consecutive crucial possessions in overtime, he committed a turnover, missed an open jump shot and then fouled Manu Ginobili on a 3-point attempt, enabling the Spurs to take control for good.

That Bibby struggled on a night in which so many other things went right for Sacramento was especially frustrating for the Kings, who looked poised to even the first-round playoff series even without suspended star Ron Artest.

Kevin Martin, the second-year guard who served as Artest's replacement, dazzled in his first career playoff start, scoring 26 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who like Martin was playing in only his second NBA postseason game, carried the Kings for much of the second half and racked up 27 points and nine rebounds. Abdur-Rahim shot 12 of 19 from the floor, using a repertoire consisting mainly of jump hooks over Tim Duncan.

And Bonzi Wells also did his part to pick up the slack for Artest, scoring 28 points and grabbing 12 rebounds before fouling out with 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

"Our guys did everything but win the game," Adelman said.

Bibby, meanwhile, never could find the rhythm that allowed him to average 28.3 points against the Spurs in the regular season. Even with Martin taking the burden of chasing Parker and allowing Bibby to rest his legs, Bibby looked tentative for most of the night. He missed all four 3-pointers he attempted.

For a few moments, though, it looked like Bibby might be able to claw his way out of his slump when the Kings needed it most. He hit his first two shots of overtime, the second giving Sacramento a one-point lead with 3:59 remaining. But with a chance to extend that lead one trip later, he threw the ball away for the first of his two turnovers in the extra session, and the Kings never threatened again.

Spurs star Duncan does little things

The look on Tim Duncan's face as he walked off the court with 9:38 remaining in the fourth quarter Tuesday night was typical Tim Duncan stoic, the stone face drawn just a tad tighter than normal.

As he neared referee Dick Bavetta, who had whistled him for the fifth time in the game, he shot him a sidelong glance that spoke volumes: Duncan was not happy to be leaving the game at such a critical juncture after a call he clearly believed had been kicked.

Duncan was forced to sit for nearly the next five minutes and watch the Kings take a lead that nearly held up in Game 2 of their first-round series. And when he did return, with 4:42 left in regulation, he had to defend Sacramento's red-hot Shareef Abdur-Rahim, knowing that if he picked up one more foul it would send him to the bench for good.

The Kings knew it, too, and they fed the ball to Abdur-Rahim on the low post on nearly every trip up the floor.

Duncan managed to hold Abdur-Rahim, who finished with 27 points on 12-of-19 shooting, to two baskets and two free throws, playing defense just aggressively enough to frustrate the Kings forward while avoiding the sixth foul. The Spurs eventually won 128-119 in overtime.

"He's a smart individual," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Duncan, "and he knows he's important in the sense of creating stability for everything we do, so it was important that he stay in the game. He did as good a job as he could do of not fouling out on Rahim."

Duncan finished with 14 points, making 4 of 10 shots and 6 of 8 free throws, and grabbed 13 rebounds. What might have been his biggest contribution, however, was a screen he set on Sacramento point guard Mike Bibby after Manu Ginobili fired a pass along the baseline to Brent Barry with seven seconds left in the game and the Kings leading 109-106.

Bibby had seen Barry, uncovered in the corner, and was sprinting to close out on him before Barry could launch his potential game-tying shot. Duncan simply stepped in front of him and kept him from reaching Barry, whose 3-point shot bounced high off the front of the rim, kissed off the top of the backboard, and fell through the net with four seconds left in regulation to tie the score.
