10.26 Former Spur David Robinson receives national honor

U.S. News Media Group, in association with the Center for Public Leadership at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, has released the 2009 list of America’s Best Leaders.

The list includes former San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson, founder of the Carver Academy. Robinson founded the Carver Academy in 2001. The institution is located on San Antonio’s East Side and provides pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade students an education regardless of their race, creed or financial status.

The Carver Academy has become a model for elementary schools across the world. And while 98 percent of the academy’s student body is attending on scholarship, its students consistently score above the national standards on The Stanford Achievement Test.

U.S. News Media Group and the Center for Public Leadership say the America’s Best Leaders list honors a select group of inspiring individuals from a variety of fields — including business, public service, education, and the arts — who have contributed to industry advancements with their innovation and achievements. Those who have been honored have been recognized for their advocacy, service, activism and philanthropy, and for dedicating their careers to “improving the everyday lives of people across the globe.”

In addition to Robinson, the 2009 edition of America’s Best Leaders includes:

• Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board;

• Cory Booker, mayor of Newark;

• John Chambers, chairman and CEO of Cisco Systems Inc.;

• Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia Inc.;

• John Doerr, partner in the firm of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers;

• Cheryl Dorsey, president of Echoing Green;

• Eve Ensler, founder and president of V-DAY;

• Norman Francis, president of Xavier University of Louisiana;

• Orrin G. Hatch, U.S. Senator;

• Edward Kennedy, former U.S. Senator;

• Susan Hockfield, president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology;

• Kathleen Magee, co-founder president of Operation Smile;

• Dr. William Magee Jr., co-founder and CEO of Operation Smile;

• Greg Mortenson, executive director of the Central Asia Institute;

• Ray Odierno, commanding general of the Multi-National Force in Iraq;
