Big Ben and little Tony — same size

Buck Harvey - PITTSBURGH — “I don't mean this to sound rude,” Ben Roethlisberger began last week, and naturally everyone perked up.

When anyone says they don't want to sound a certain way, they usually do.

Roethlisberger continued, addressing Tony Romo and his fascination with celebrity girlfriends: “He is asking for it. Dating the high profile, doing all the stuff he wants to do. That's the life he chooses to live off the football field.”

This isn't meant to sound rude, either. But that's funny. Big Ben has dated, among others, LPGA calendar model Natalie Gulbis and actress Missy Peregrym.

That also fits. Because as much as people think these quarterbacks are different, because one has won and the other hasn't, they are as united as they were last summer when they played in the same golf foursome.

They are tough, young athletes who compete better than they throw the football. Their real differences, as today will again show, are their franchises.

Roethlisberger and Romo aren't precisely the same. Roethlisberger is taller, and he comes with a first-round pedigree.

Roethlisberger went 11th overall in 2004. Among those who passed on him were the Texans, who were clearly set at quarterback with David Carr, and the Lions, who could always find room for another receiver.

They took Roy Williams, who will also be in Pittsburgh today.

Roethlisberger's social life differs, too. Neither Gulbis nor Peregrym have been photographed in a private box at Heinz Field wearing a pink No. 7 jersey.

But none of those details separate them, not when they step on a field. “We're both kind of the risky, gunslinger type, if you will,” Roethlisberger said last week.

The risks will be there for both today. The only linebacker tandem in the league with more combined sacks than DeMarcus Ware and Greg Ellis is the Pittsburgh duo of James Harrison and LaMarr Woodley.

Still, most have a far different perception of Roethlisberger and Romo. One, after all, has won a Super Bowl, and the other has yet to win even a playoff game.

Given that, doesn't each embody the characteristics of their teams?

If anything, their teams define them. Roethlisberger was drafted by a franchise, after all, that long ago thought Plaxico Burress wasn't worth the trouble.

The Steelers had taken a chance on Burress in the first round, because 6-foot-5 receivers always are attractive. And while he never committed a major crime in Pittsburgh, he did enough silly things that, after the 2004 season, they let him leave as a free agent.

The Cowboys, as bringing back Pacman Jones suggests, are the opposite.

Joey Porter exited Pittsburgh in a similar way, and the Steelers have made tough decisions on even popular, productive players, such as Antwaan Randle El. But that's the nature of the franchise. The Steelers always have had a strong sense of who is necessary and who is not.

There is a philosophy from the front office that overrides everything, including an unsettled ownership issue. It's strong enough to succeed without Bill Cowher, and it's built on a formula that doesn't depend on the magic of a quarterback.

It depends on defense, and this will be the eighth straight season the Steelers' defense has ranked among the top 10. They have continuity, with Dick LeBeau running the defense for the past 10 years, and they have a culture in place.

The scouts know what the coaches want, and their drafting success reflects this. The Steelers have taken 25 defensive players in the first three rounds since 1992, and 15 of them have graded out as exceptional.

They know what they are doing as a group, and LeBeau and his zone-blitz scheme is based upon one principle: Stop the run.

They will again today, without Marion Barber on the field. They will make the Cowboys one-dimensional, and then they will chase Romo.

Then, for the Cowboys to win, Romo can't get by making just a few plays, or by leaning on his running game. He will have to win it.

He will have to be far different than Roethlisberger. When they are really the same.
