Summer League Review
by Patrick Rees, spurs.com

Spurs 2008 Summer League Recap: The Rookies

The San Antonio Spurs participated in two summer leagues this off season, the NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League and the Rocky Mountain Revue, hosted by the Utah Jazz. The Silver and Black played four games at each event and ended with a 2-2 record in Las Vegas and a 3-1 record in Salt Lake City. The summer league roster was highlighted by the three rookies selected by the Spurs in the 2008 NBA Draft and Anthony Tolliver, who spent 2007-08 with the Iowa Energy of the D-League. Below is a highlight of what Malik Hairston (48th overall by Phoenix, Oregon), George Hill (26th overall, IUPUI), James Gist (57th overall, Maryland) and Anthony Tolliver (un-drafted, Creighton) accomplished in both leagues.

JAMES GIST

Las Vegas
The University of Maryland product had a very solid showing in Las Vegas. He was third on the team in scoring averaging 10.8 points, second in rebounding with 7.3 and first in blocks with 0.8 per contest. Gist shot a team best .621 (18-29) from the field and tallied two double-doubles while appearing in all four games with three starts. His best outing in Vegas came against the Hornets when he scored a team-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds and two steals.

ANTHONY TOLLIVER

Las Vegas
The biggest surprise of the Spurs summer league team was Anthony Tolliver. The 6-8 forward from Creighton earned himself a contract and signed with the Spurs on July 23, one day after the team was done competing at the Rocky Mountain Revue. Tolliver made the most of his opportunity and got off to a good start in three games and one start in Vegas. He averaged a second-best 12.3 points and 5.0 rebounds in 23 minutes per contest. Tolliver shot a second-best .571 (12-21) from the field and a team-best .615 (8-13) from three-point range. He posted 10 or more points in each of his three outings and had his best performance against New York with 10 points including 3-of-5 three-point attempts and nine rebounds in 19 minutes.
